Sycamore, American
Platanus occidentalis

Other Common Names: American planetree, American sycamore, buttonwood, buttonball-tree, eastern sycamore, whitewood, water beech, Virginia maple

Sycamore is a common tree and one of the largest in the eastern deciduous forests. It is a fast-growing and relatively long-lived tree. Sycamore is widely planted as a shade tree because of its distinctive white, exfoliating bark and broad, dense crown. Because of its size, it should not be planted in small yards or under power lines. Recently, it is being replaced in many plantings by Platanus acerifolia (London Planetree) due to the latter's resistance to the damaging fungal pathogen, Anthracnose.

Type of tree:
American Sycamore treefalls into the following type(s): Shade Trees

Mature Height:
The American Sycamore grows to be 80' - 100+' feet in height.

Mature Spread:
The American Sycamore has a spread of about 40' to 60' at full maturity.

Growth Rate:
This tree grows at a fast growth rate.

Sun:
The American Sycamore does well in full sun.

Soil:
The American Sycamore prefers moist, deep, rich soils but is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions. Sycamores often grow in sandy soils along streams and rivers.

Moisture:
It has normal moisture requirements, and can withstand some drought in humid regions only.

Leaves:
The leaves are large broad flat, like a hand with three to five lobes. The edge of the leaf is serrated and american sycamore leaves are deciduous.

Flower Color:
Both male and female flowers are produced on the same tree.

Bloom Time:
May to June..

Fruit Description:
The fruit is ball shaped and ripens in October. They are suspended from the branch from on a 3 to 6 inch stalks. They remain on the tree all winter until they fall apart in early spring and disperse their many small seeds.

Plant Needs
Light: Full to partial sun

Soil Type: Prefers moist, deep, rich soils in full sun, but is very adaptable to a wide variety of soils, including dry soils, wet soils, compacted soils, poor soils, and soils of various pH

Care
Due to its susceptibility to Anthracnose disease, fertilize with formulations that promote woody, strong growth rather than excessive foliar growth. To minimize the chances of contracting the Anthracnose fungus, keep the tree strong and healthy. Pruning regularly to remove deadwood and promote a leader.

Problems
Anthracnose is a fungal disease that attacks many shade trees including sycamore, white oak, elm, dogwood and maple. Tends to drop twigs easily so clean-up can be a hassle.

Additional Information: American Sycamore

Attributes:
Fast growing tree shade tree with large green leaves. Mostly easily recognized for its bark which is light brown, olive green and white. The American sycamore is commonly planted in parks and gardens for ornamental purposes because of its beauty and adaptability.

Description:

Wildlife Value:
Some birds and animals choose to make their home in older American Sycamore trees which become hollow as they age. Woodpeckers, Barred Owls and Raccoons are known to live in these trees.

History/Lore/Use:
Native Americans used to use the trunk of the sycamore tree to create their large canoes. Sycamore is often used to make the backs, necks and scrolls of violins.

Sycamore Tree Wood

American Sycamore wood is commonly used for veneer, plywood,  interior trim, pallets/crates, flooring, furniture, particleboard, paper (pulpwood), and tool handles.

Sycamore Tree Trivia

A sycamore tree can produce over 10,000 wind-dispersed seeds every year.

The world's largest sycamore tree is located on the Back Fork of the Elk River in Webster Springs.

Sycamore trees are one of the oldest species of trees on earth.

Don't plant a sycamore tree too close to your house, they have a shallow fibrous root system that can damage your foundation, sewer pipe or sidewalks.

The American Sycamore tree is easily recognized by its greenish white, gray and brown mottled bark which gives it a camouflage appearance.

Sycamore fruit clusters are ball shaped which hang from single stalks and remain on the tree all winter. In spring they fall apart to disperse their small seeds which are blown by the wind, eaten by birds or carried by water.

The bark of the Eastern Sycamore exfoliates in irregular patches to reveal brown, green, orange and cream colored undertones.

The Sycamore

In massy foliage of a sunny green
The splendid sycamore adorns the spring,
Adding rich beauties to the varied scene,
That Nature’s breathing arts alone can bring.
Hark! how the insects hum around, and sing,
Like happy Ariels, hid from heedless view-
And merry bees, that feed, with eager wing,
On the broad leaves, glazed o’er with honey dew.
The fairy Sunshine gently flickers through
Upon the grass, and buttercups below;
And in the foliage Winds their sports renew,
Waving a shade romantic to and fro,
That o’er the mind in sweet disorder flings
A flitting dream of Beauty’s fading things.
