Peach trees were first grown in China as far back as the tenth century but did not arrive in North America until the seventeenth century.

Peaches, like plums and cherries, have stones in the center of the fruit and are called drupes.

A peach is both tasty and very healthy for you. A medium peach contains 40 calories, no fat, sodium, or cholesterol. A peach is a good source of vitamins A and C.

Peaches are sometimes categorized as freestone or clingstone. The pits of freestone peaches are easily removed whereas the clingstone peach pits are more difficult to separate from the fruit.

Peaches are juicy when ripe but can create a mess and leave you with wet sticky fingers. Did you know that one can easily open a ripe peach; Cut the peach from the top all around with a sharp knife down to the pit. Grip both peach sides one in each hand and twist slowly. The peach will separate into two peach halves for easy eating.
