Wildlife Value:
White spruces are very important evergreens. Besides providing nesting sites and shelter, white spruces provide food for many kinds of wildlife. Crossbills, evening grosbeaks and red-breasted nuthatches prefer the seeds. The foliage is eaten by grouse, rabbits and deer. Red squirrels cut open cones to eat the seeds, and they feast upon young, tender spruce shoots. The bark is enjoyed by both porcupines and black bears, sometimes to the detriment of the trees.

History/Lore/Use:
White spruce is the mainstay for the pulp and paper industry. It is also used in the construction industry.

Spruce Tree: Comments, Trivia, Reference

Spruce Trivia: Spruce trees that grow near rivers where salmon spawning runs occur, grow two to three times taller. The Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada is an example of this phenomenon.

Why? Because, when bears catch a large salmon, they like to go into the woods to eat the best fatty parts. Bears leave over half of the remaining salmon which decomposes on the spruce forest floor . Decayed salmon provides extra rich nitrogen fertilizer to the soil, producing better growing conditions which leads to taller spruce trees.

The Sitka Spruce, picea sitchensis, is one of the largest spruce trees. The wood, which is easy to work with, has good acoustic properties and is therefore popular for making musical instruments.

The Sitka Spruce is the state tree of Alaska

Spruce trees are not the best choice for christmas trees as their stems and needles dry out quickly when cut and the needles fall off when touched.

Colorado Blue Spruce Fact: The blue Colorado spruce tree's new growth in the Spring produces the bluest needles. Over the summer and winter seasons the newest needles will lose some of their brilliant blue color.
